Police in Oregon Continue to Abuse… Latest Story of Pointless Arrest.

Original article can be found at the end of this post. My goal for this page is obviously to write as much as possible, but also to spread as much news as possible. When something is already brilliantly written, I tend to simply repost with credits.

Two weeks after a Gresham police officer snatched a camera phone from a woman recording him, another Gresham police officer arrested a woman for recording him before turning on a man who happened to be recording that arrest.

This time it was an officer Brooder  who is under the impression that  citizens are not allowed to audio record him without his permission.

But Brooder is highly misinformed because Oregon is a one-party consent state when it comes to the wiretapping law, meaning as long as somebody is part of a conversation, they are allowed to record whether the other person is informed or not.

Even if it was a two-party consent state, he still wouldn’t have a say in the matter because he did not have an expectation of privacy as he stood outside an apartment complex.

But considering how the local media gave the Gresham Police Department a free pass on the issue during the last month’s incident, it is not surprising that Brooder thinks he can create his own laws.

It all started when Brooder and other officers responded to a call from a woman in the apartment complex complaining about a neighbor who had threatened her. Continue reading Police in Oregon Continue to Abuse… Latest Story of Pointless Arrest.

Politicians in North Dakota are pushing a package of abortion restrictions, including the most extreme abortion ban in the country, which would outlaw abortion as early as 6 weeks! This would essentially ban nearly all abortion care in the state.

These bills are blatantly unconstitutional and are nothing more than an effort to close NAF member Red River Women’s Clinic, the state’s sole abortion provider.

Support Red River Women’s Clinic and tell North Dakota Governor Dalrymple to veto these attacks on abortion access!

Join NAF and thousands of activists across the country to produce a Thunderclap by Tuesday, March 19, at 3pm EDT.

Thunderclap is a tool that lets you and others share the same message at the same time together; spreading an idea through Facebook and Twitter that cannot be ignored. We need to register 1,000 supporters to Tweet a single simultaneous message by Tuesday, March 19, at 3pm EDT.

Click here to join our Thunderclap—it takes less than a minute to get involved.

Thank you for standing with NAF member Red River Women’s Clinic and women in North Dakota!

Sincerely,

Vicki Saporta
President and CEO

P.S. Domestic Abuse… Why Does She (or He) Stay ? (Once More, A Bit Personal…)

*Notice: I have spent a lot of time thinking about how I want to approach these posts regarding domestic abuse, and I think I will be writing a bit differently when posting them. The facts are still very much raw wounds to me, and the wounds are deepened daily. I am not in danger myself anymore, but the person I love is. However, I refuse to leave until she comes with me. So to conclude…I will write a bit different anytime I speak of domestic abuse… It has forever been, in one way or another, an on going issue. Soon, I hope that changes.*

                     Now on to the post!

Two things I hate hearing when speaking of domestic abuse… “If he is so horrible why does she* stay? He seems like a nice guy to me, he wouldn’t hurt a fly!  Or, the even worse, “He may lose his temper or have lost his temper with her, but she hasn’t left him, so he couldn’t be THAT bad of a guy.”

Come to think of it, there are quiet a few things I hate hearing regarding abuse; most of them said by people who have never lived in an abusive household or relationship.

Back to the topic of this post… Why does she stay?

I can’t speak for everyone, only speak from what I know, have seen and from research. So first I want to say… just like with having a loved one fall into addiction, I know it is beyond depressing and frustrating to watch a loved one stay in an abusive relationship. No matter what “kind” of abuse; be it emotional/mental/verbal abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse or physical abuse…it is almost harder on the loved ones who have to see it happening than to the victim, because there is really nothing much for the “watchers” to do.

After so many years of seeing abuse, Continue reading Domestic Abuse… Why Does She (or He) Stay ? (Once More, A Bit Personal…)

Refusing to Allow the Abuser the Ability to Steal My Voice!

This song is perfect for how I feel tonight, I do believe. I wrote this on my other site which is even more new than this site…so I thought I would repost it here… Just in case anyone thinks I am a blogger who only blogs when they want… I blog daily… But a big issue came up and I was focused on it… When suddenly, I realized the wounds here are very raw. But after writing it, I have made my mind up: the abuser will not take my voice or my writing away from me. So I do expect to have posts up tonight regarding domestic violence. For now, and for those interested, I’ll post a semi personal post up…and hope it sheds a bit of light as to why I struggled so. If you read, thank you!

I am passionate about many topics and regarding most of them I have been impacted in one way or another personally by the cause I support. I’ve seen horrible things done by police, I’ve seen how the system doesn’t care or work for the people, I’ve had a hard personal life… But I can still write on all topics with anger and passion… Except, apparently, one. That one is domestic abuse and violence. I have in the past written on these topics but I had removed myself from the home I had grown up in and though I was in an abusive relationship myself at the time, I could still write with furious passion about it. Now that I have moved back and am living next door to my parents, I have frozen up when it comes to writing about abuse. Why? Because the 40+ years of severe abuse she has lived, is still going, only stronger than ever…and I feel like a child again. A helpless child. I am trying to help her get out, but if I can’t help my own mother, how can I expect my writings to help anyone? Obviously, I am not doing something right. I’ve been trying for 20 some odd years now, since I was a little kid, to help my mom. She took me in when my birth parents bailed, many, many times…and not once did she have to. She did her best and she is my reason for breathing…but I am lacking money to help. I suppose writing about abuse makes the reality I am living in -yet again; just as I did all of my life-, hurt even more as I can write all day but it is not saving her.

Why I Believe Smartphones -Including the iPhone- is Vital to the People

*A simple thought turned into a blog post… Be ware! 🙂

I love technology and I get so annoyed when fellow activists for any cause talk down about it with things such as “having an iPhone or smartphone is sellling out” because it supports corporations and other humanity issues. Fair enough, I see where they are coming from, however…

Attack Bills Make Women’s Health A Political Weapon

March 14th, 2013

By Claudia Kolker
Communications Consultant

Bill filing time is up at the Legislature, and it’s exposed an arsenal of bills aimed at women’s health. The main weapon: TRAPs, or Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers. It’s easy to spot these bills. They’re medically unnecessary, and they single out abortion providers for intense, politically motivated regulations.

One TRAP bill would burden clinics with so many unneeded regulations that all but three or four clinics would likely close. The bill forces abortion clinics to meet higher, specialized regulatory standards designed for facilities that perform outpatient surgery.  These regulations have little to do with abortion. Instead, they’re meant control surgery variables such as anesthesiologists, laboratories, and radiology procedures. Again, there’s no medical or legal reason to apply these standards to abortion clinics. But if this bill passes, it endangers thousands of Texas women by closing the very facilities that could offer them safe, regulated health services. SB 1198

Sen. Dan Patrick’s proposed restriction on medication-based abortion is one of the worst. Doctors know non-surgical abortions, which use medication in the first weeks of pregnancy, are safe and affordable. Yet Patrick wants to force unneeded repeat appointments, only with one physician, on any Texas woman prescribed a medication-based abortion. There’s no medical reason for this government intervention. Abortions are intensely regulated and among the safest medical procedures performed in the United States. But then, this bill isn’t about protecting women’s health. It’s about promoting Dan Patrick. SB 97

Then there are the politicians who want to meddle directly in families’ most private decisions. A proposed ban would outlaw abortion in almost every case after 20 weeks –  in other words, before many women even know they are pregnant. That means a family with a tragic complication might not know about it in time to consult their doctor, or worse, be goaded into a hasty decision. The 20 week ban recklessly takes the most private health decisions from families and their doctors, handing it directly to Texas politicians. That’s not where our reproductive health decisions belong. SB 25
